The Teaching Department of Surgery and its branches was established in the academic year 2003-2004. The Teaching Department of Surgery is considered one of the most important departments in the clinical stage. The educational process began in it with the cooperation of faculty members in the Department of Surgery and its branches at the Faculty of Human Medicine, University of Tripoli, as well as visiting professors from the sister country of Egypt under the supervision of the Dean of the College. At that time, surgery and its branches were taught in the third stage (fourth and fifth years), followed by a three-month supplementary training stage (internship) in the general and private surgery departments in one of the teaching hospitals.

For the Teaching Department of Surgery to become a beacon for continuous distinguished medical education and to advance scientific research and innovation to meet societal needs. 

The Educational Surgery Department is committed to preparing scientifically qualified doctors who are able to provide distinguished health care. The Educational Surgery Department is also committed to the continuous development of the educational process and distinguished scientific research in order to achieve locally approved quality standards and confront community health problems efficiently and competently. 

·       Introducing students to the basic principles and concepts in various general and special surgeries.

·       Providing students with the clinical skills necessary to diagnose and treat various diseases through surgical intervention.

·       The student should be able to deal with various surgical emergencies

·       Participation in scientific seminars and national conferences aimed at improving and raising health awareness among citizens.

·       Clinical training through work at Gharyan Central Teaching Hospital, with the aim of providing the student with the clinical skills necessary for diagnosis and treatment, including the following:

o  Taking disease data from the patient in the correct scientific manner.

o  Conducting a general and local clinical examination of the patient. ü Request and conduct some basic tests to diagnose the disease.

o  Analyzing the data resulting from the disease history, patient examination, and other tests to reach the initial diagnosis.

o  Knowledge of basic diseases and their causes.

o  Making a decision to treat the patient under the supervision of the most experienced specialists and practitioners.

o  Carrying out some simple therapeutic procedures.

o  Follow the development in surgical sciences, and learn about the latest modern treatment methods.

o  Continuing postgraduate studies and ensuring continuing medical education.

o  Participation in raising the level of health services.

o  Good treatment of patients and adherence to professional ethics in all its aspects.

o  Self-capable of thinking, creativity, and continuing to raise the scientific level.

o  Disease control and prevention within society.

o  Identifying the patient’s social and psychological condition and how to deal with it.
